THE BASIC VERSIONS HAVE THE SAME FIRMWARE EXCEPT THEY HAVE NO FLASHES WHEN CHANGING MODES, NO SERIES RESISTORS, AND 5k PRESETS INSTEAD OF 10k PRESETS. THE UNBUFFERED BASIC VERSION NEEDS 5V AND HAS ON-BOARD 47uF CAPACITOR. THE BUFFERED VERSION HAS A VOLTAGE REGULATOR WHICH WILL WORK WITH 12V. THE TERMINALS HAVE MARKINGS FOR MOUNTING TO A 0.1" GRID. HOLES ARE ALIGNED TO THE GRID. THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION APPLIES TO THE LED VERSION THOUGH OPERATION IS OTHERWISE THE SAME:

The unit uses 6 5mm common-cathode RGB leds. These can be cut off and the leads fixed into terminal blocks for either extending, using with separate leds or using as PWM variable voltage sources. Light can be piped from the existing leds via optical cable. The leads of each led can be bent to a wide angle above or below the board to achieve a wide light dispersion. There are two buttons used to operate the unit. After switch on, one button is repeatedly pressed to cycle through the 14 patterns:

This is Run mode and the selected pattern will show continually. To edit a pattern, select it as described above and then press the same button for at least a second. The first led is now adjustable, turn the 3 potentiometers to see it change in red, green and blue light content. Pressing the first button briefly at this stage will cycle through the leds, to be adjusted. Make adjustments and press the other button to save after each one. When a pattern is satisfactory press the first button again for at least a second. Change other patterns in the same way:

When powered on again the last pattern to be used will display.

To use Auto mode (can only be done from Run mode) press the secon button briefly. Indication of the time duration between pattern changes is now shown - between 0 and 6 green leds will light according to the position of the red rotary control. This means 10 minutes per led lit, proportionally. Press the switch again to enter the Auto mode sequencing.

To use Countdown mode (can only be done from Run mode) press the second button for over one second. Indication of the time duration until the device switches the leds off and goes to sleep, is now shown - between 0 and 6 blue leds will light according to the position of the red rotary control. This means 10 minutes per led lit, proportionally. Press the switch again to enter the countdown:

The leds supplied have clear, undifused cases. The light from the 3 leds is not fully mixed because of this but still looks good. They can be sanded, used with or reflected by diffuse material. Power is from 3 AA cells (not included) and please note that as the voltage falls the brightness will also. Using the device for PWM voltage controlling must take account of this. Cost is kept down by using this supply. If using outputs other than the leds supplied, series resistances will probably need to be changed. The red leds use 100R, green use 330R and blue use 220R resistors. Static damage is possible with an open circuit board and care must be used when fitting it into your project. Board is supplied tested and in an anti-static bag. Use an anti-static wrist strap for most protection if soldering and don't touch the tracks when in use. Original uses for this circuit have been for lighting models, mood lighting and for use in Chinese lanterns. With only the red leds fully lit a test using alkaline cells ran for about 2 days before they were too dim.
